• The G.O.A.T.

Since the death of Chris "Notorious BIG" Wallace on March 9, 1997 he has long been considered as the greatest of all time. On the strength of Ready to Die, a 5 mic cd no question, and the double disc sensation Life after death, it has been accepted and rarely desputed that the title is his. We here it in rhymes from other artists and of course we here it every year when March 9th rolls around. I have no problem agreeing that he was a great MC who could probably still be dropping some of the best music in the game if not for tragedy, but i choose not to base my opinion on what ifs and if onlys. So with that, i'd like to take the time to say that i disagree.....and here are a few reasons why:

*It seems to me that BIG has the crown in part because of his death. Hip Hop heads around the U.S. were devestated by Bigs tragic death and have refused to even consider anyone else as the greatest. As proof to this i offer up the fact that people often considered BIG L as one of the best ever after he lost his life.....youtube some Guru videos right now and read some of the comments claiming that he was the best ever....people are swayed by their emotions.

*It seemed for a long time that when discussing who was the best ever, the conversation never went anywhere beside BIG or PAC, which in turn kept the whole east vs. west thing alive for the longest. West coast heads screamed PAC was the greatest and East Coast heads screamed BIG was the greatest. Both were great artists, but im sorry to inform all of you that neither is the greatest.

*I tend to believe that Diddy screaming about BIG being the greatest in all his videos in the 90's swayed a lot of people as well. It also helped make it a popular opinion. I may be reaching here but Diddy had/has a lot of power in the industry and was all over the TV for a couple years after BIGS death.

Now, lets get to whom i consider the greatest and a few that some might consider.

NAS...I consider Illmatic to be one of the illest cd's of all time but looking at the rest of Nas's discography for the most part and its drowning in disappointment. So sorry Nas fans, no. Before you all retort with this cd was good and this cd was good, i wont argue the fact that he has had some other good cds. It was written is another of my favorites. He's just not the GOAT...im sorry. I bring Nas up mainly because he is a great MC, possibly top 5 ever at this point.

Ludacris...While an entertainer on the mic i really dont think he's done enough to be in the conversation.I love bumpin Luda in my car and he has some club bangers no question. To me it takes more than that though.

Eminem...Em hurts himself with his retarded ass rhymes. He has one of the best flows in the game right now but he wastes it on songs about gerbils in his ass. He drops fire verses all the damn time that just make jaws drop, then follows it with "step father ass raping him" songs. I hope we get Em at his finest before he quits the game.

Lil Wayne....It hurt me to even type that cause i dont get the appeal. I know that he is one of the most popular rappers out right now to which i just continue to :smdh. I have yet to hear anything that made me want to run out and buy something by him.....and quite frankly when i hear his "greatest rapper alive" claims i tend to laugh out loud...literally.

Now when i picked this artist I considered his entire discography as well as the length he's been putting out quality music. To me the G.O.A.T is Jay-Z. If you look at the length this guy has been putting out good music it's just amazing. From his debut in 1996's "Reasonable Doubt"(5 mics) to 2009's "The Blueprint 3" he has contiued to bring straight fire. Looking at his discography the only CD i didnt genuinly enjoy is "Kingdom Come". I'm not saying every cd has been fire from start to finish but i will say they've been quality releases. I know hes done some very pop inspired collabs but even his verses on them were quality and you know he got paid. So there you have it...to me the GOAT is JAY-Z

I welcome the disagreements and the "bandwagon fan" comments im sure to get, but before you put them down, consider this. Jay-z is not even in my top 5 favorite rappers. That list right now, and it does change from time to time, is as follows:

    1. Tech N9ne
    2. Atmosphere
    3. Kid Cudi
    4. Lupe Fiasco
    5. Brother Ali

So hate on the article and hate on my favorites if you'd like but just think to your self:"Jay-z is the greatest of all time". Refreshing isn't it?

I am a Jay fan.... so saying he is the greatest doesnt really bother me much... he is definitely the most consistent... 14 years of quality.... thats hard to match or top....

never been a big Wayne fan...

about BIG, his flow was nuts... the rhymes the punchlines out of this world.... i wish we could have seen what he would have become... i think he was just scratching the surface... REady to Die still gets rotation in my ride 17 years later.... sigh.... but its hard to say that he is the greatest off of 2 albums... Great no doubt... greatest, not sure....

I'm a Biggie fanboy and proud of it. Yeah he only made 2 albums but they are timeless. like Michael Jackson Bad or Off the Wall. His music was (deeper than rap). It was like watching Goodfellas or Casino and Joe Pesci and robert Deniro was rapping the whole time. Lets not base greatness on album sales. My ears don't worry about who went platinum or who's on tv.Jay-Z is a good argument lyrically. The 80's and 90's are what made me.

i just said the east coast bias cuz u didnt even mention pac in the conversation as best of all time.. Not even gonna get into the argument of those two cuz its a never ending one, and to be honest I dont really no which one I even like more. But for him not to even be mentioned just seemed a little off the wall to me.

I guess i could have broke down Pac's discography as well but didnt think i needed to after covering him here....my bad. Pac is obviously in the discussion...always has been which is why i didnt cover him more than that. I chose instead to cover a few other artists who i here people callin the greatest all the time.
